THE CORSAIRS
No place in the world except Ibiza has ever dedicated a monument to a pirate. The obelisk in honour to the Ibizencan corsair Antonio Riquer reminds us of his victory in 1806 over the heavily armed pirate ship Felicity steered by his antagonist Miquel Novelli from Gibraltar . Cosair used to be a quite honorable profession and required the King´s commision. Of course the 3rd or 5th part of the bate had to be delivered to the sovereign. Looking from the obelisk up to the ancient town one discovers underneath the cathedral the inscription “El Corsario”. This used to be the corsair´s palace connected even today to several subterranean passages to the harbour, where the pirates had their tiny boats in caves ready to attack foreign ships. The Hollywood pirate Errol Flynn used to be a steady guest in the former corsair´s palace, as well as Onassis, Pink Floyd, Grace Kelly, Romy Schneider, Dean Acheson, Soraya, Maximilian Schell, Walter Gropius, Fürst Rainier of Monaco and many more who enjoyed longer or shorter times in the rooms of this romantic palace. Due to the success of the movie “Pirates of the Caribbean” neither corsairs nor pirates will be forgotten within the next years...
